Sy Kaster was born September 10, 1917, and was raised on a farm in Brown County, Wisconsin. During the Depression, in 1933, he went to work for the Civil Conservation Corps, and in 1940, he married Leona Abts, daughter of a neighboring farmer. Early in the marriage, he joined the Army Air Force and became a ball turret gunner on the B-17 Flying Fortress, one of the most hazardous positions on the bomber, and flew 28 missions as part of the 8th Air Force. After the war, Sy became managing partner of real estate brokerage in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Sy and his wife had eight children, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling and was extremely devoted to family. Sy passed away in 2006 at the age of 89.
