I really enjoyed this book! I found it in our college library and picked it up on a whim. Once I opened it, I read it all the way through -- it was so much fun! I'm no expert on fashion or fashion history, so I can't comment on the academic quality of the content. However, I can say that this book was a pleasure to read. It was concise and straightforward, the tips and details were practical, and the attitude throughout was friendly. All in all, I found it to be a great first book on the subject. I also view my wardrobe with greater confidence and understanding. Here's an overview of the chapters: 1. The Four Shopping Sins -- Occasion Shopping, Single-Item Purchasing, Sale Shopping, and Insecurity; And Now -- Investment Shopping 2. Your Body Type -- Discussion of figure types and how to correct for figure problems. 3. The Three Cycles -- The three five-year fashion cycles: Town and Country, Sophisticate, and Gamin. 4. The Seven Looks -- The seven looks (Town & Country, Sophisticate, Gamin, Romantic, Patrician, Exotic, Docent), variations on those looks, how they come across to different groups of people, and how to use them to your advantage. 5. Color Impact -- How people respond to colors and how to break out of your "acceptable" range of colors using makeup tricks. 6. Clothes That Get Results -- How to dress for different jobs or industries. Lots of practical tips. A very interesting and fun chapter! 7. Go Shopping! -- Wrapping it all up with setting a budget, where to shop, a strategy for building your wardrobe, and a few more things.

If you read "Don't Go To The Cosmetics Counter Without Me" by Paula Begoun, you can be equally armed shopping for clothes after reading Suzie Woodward's "Wardrobe Strategy". The author shares insider secrets as well as her own theory about predictable cycles of fashion, design, and clothing styles. The book may appear dated, but her overall theory has stood the test of time and will reward the reader with a new-found sense of confidence when shopping for clothes, and a plan for building a workable wardrobe. Little gems about dressing to look your best are sprinkled throughout. This book is a must-read if you feel like a fashion failure or a victim of ever-changing trendy fads. Students of fashion history will value this book as an excellent reference for the 1980's styles.
