Jo-Ann Monsels was born on June 17, 1990. She officially founded the Children's University of Suriname on April 12, 2021, following a pilot project of children's lectures for Surinamese children in collaboration with other graduates of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Suzie and the Vegetable King is Jo-Ann's second children's book, in which the theme of agriculture takes center stage. The story takes place in the district of Saramacca, where the Vegetable King organizes a drawing competition to encourage children to eat more vegetables. Amier, Marie, and little Suzie decide to participate. They submit their drawing, but the outcome of the competition is surprising, because Suzie secretly placed moldy bok choi leaves in the envelope with their drawing. This book is a welcome addition to the teaching materials of the Children's University of Suriname to help improve reading and language skills among children from grade 4 and those at the third reading level. The author hopes that children will enjoy reading Suzie and the Vegetable King both at school and at home.
