Sustainability of urban drainage projects

The purpose of this work is to raise the issue of flooding, which is mainly faced by medium and large cities. The main causes that contribute to the worsening of flooding are analyzed, including the disorganized growth of cities, the occupation of areas that are naturally designed to store large floods, the lack of planning, and the construction of drainage systems that are not the most suitable for dealing with this scourge. This work also assesses the financial and human losses. Finally, we survey the main flood-fighting programs developed by the federal government in Brazil, Argentina and the state of Colorado in the United States, through structural and non-structural measures.
