Surviving Logan

True account of a 2005 North Shore Rescue expedition on Mount Logan that became a high-altitude survival crisis during an extreme storm.

A team of experienced mountaineers and search-and-rescue personnel travelled to Canada's highest mountain as part of North Shore Rescue's fortieth-anniversary expedition. The ascent initially unfolded in good weather, but three climbers were eventually trapped on exposed Prospector's Col when an intense storm brought winds reported at up to 140 kilometres per hour.

After their tent failed and most of their equipment disappeared over the mountain, the climbers were left with little shelter and serious exposure. Frostbite, hypothermia, deep new snow and the difficulty of communicating with teammates above and below them turned a climbing expedition into a prolonged survival problem.

Surviving Logan reconstructs the decisions, improvisation and rescue challenges that followed. It is a mountaineering and search-and-rescue narrative about experienced people confronting conditions severe enough to overwhelm preparation on one of North America's most serious mountains.
