This book is based on the early years of a little girl's real life (the author) while living in East Baltimore, the Hood. It talks about her life in general during that time, including domestic violence and being enrolled in a drug study to receive injections from cadavers.

This story captures how the little girl's experiences, both challenging and joyful, shaped her understanding of the world, fostering a deep sense of empathy and determination that will guide her throughout her life. The story is set in early 1971, when children played outside more, had hands-on toys, attended neighborhood schools, and patronized neighborhood stores and restaurants.

Kia had seen a lot in her young life. But she survived it all. The whole family survived it. No matter the experiences in your young life, some things will stay with you forever. It doesn't mean you hold a grudge or don't forgive; it means you haven't forgotten and can grow beyond it.
