Survey of Hematophagous Flies and Trypanosoma Species

This textbook presents a comprehensive survey of hematophagous (blood-feeding) flies and Trypanosma species conducted in Ikara and Kubau Local Government Areas of Kaduna State, Nigeria. Based on a master's research project, the work details the entomological and parasitological field studies carried out during the dry and rainy seasons using Biconical and Nzi traps, alongside blood sample collection from cattle. The book provides a thorough literature review on the biology, ecology, and control of tsetse flies, tabanids and stable flies, as well as the trypanosomes they transmit.Key findings reveal that Stomoxys calcitrans and Tabanus spp. are the dominant hematophagous flies, while Glossina (tsetse) species were completely absent. Fly abundance peaked dramatically in the rainy season indicating a strong seasonal pattern. The prevalence of trypanosome infection in cattle was low with Trypanosoma vivax being the predominant species. The presence of trypanosomes in the absence of tsetse flies points to mechanical transmission by Stomoxys and Tabanus. Additionally, the book compares trap efficiencies, discusses the implications of other hemoparasites.
