FROM BACK COVER "Aimee Fortune LaMotte hated Nick Drummond, and with good reason. The rogue gambler had swindled her father out of everything he owned. And then the handsome Yankee had demanded a passionate night with Aimee to pay off her own gambling debts, leaving her with an illegitimate child in the bargain. Years later, an officer in the despised Union army, Nick reentered Aimee's life as the South lay in flames. And though the beautiful belle's heart cried out for revenge, she was undone by the unexpected gentleness and nobility of the man who had wronged her five years before. She could not deny the irrestible desire that drew her into the powerful loving arms of her enemy, and forced her to Surrender to the Fury."
Not Connie Mason's best although very good.

Aimee is card dealer on the "Dixie Belle" when she loses to macho nick drummond. Her pride stung, she accepts his double or nothing offer, a draw that of course she loses. The "payment" is a night in Nick's bed... He leaves in the morning without waking her. Aimee of course is furious to awake alone and more angry to become pregnant from this first time experience. She disappearsfrom society. Nick of course is oblivious to both (her virginity and then subsequent pregnancy) but does try to find her, unbeknownst to her. Aimee's anger at all of this causes her hatred for nick to continue throughout the rest of the book (although she enjoys their lovemaking). After 400 pages of her saying "I hate you" you want to tell her to "get a grip". This is the only exception I have to an otherwise excellent storyline. Of course Nick saves her and "pleasures her" over and over, and I wanted to tell him to forget it after awhile.!! I love civil war based stories and connie mason does that better than anyone else. This book is no exception. My only problem was that Aimee was such a brat and she couldn't "move on"......The love scenes are frequent and graphic. Nick strikes me as the best lover of any book I've ever read but then again it didn't take much with Aimee!

I am a great fan of Ms Mason's owning 2 of each book she has ever wrote. the are all action packed and full of live history events. Nick and Amiee meet on a river Boat during a card game. Later he looks alover for her with no luck. When the Cival War breaks out he is a Captain and is sent to A Plantation finding that after 5 yrs she is the owner with a small child. They have their ups and downs all through the book but in the end Love prevails. I love it as I do all of the books

This book is one of Connie Mason's BEST. I've been a fan of her writing and I have never been dissipointed. With this book, the story was beautifully written.I shared it with my two sisters and they too, thought it was one of those books that is a must keep, to read again and again because you can never forget it.It is worth your time, I have to say that I finish it in one day,and I don't usually finish that quickly. If you never read Connie Mason's books, I suggest you pick this one. The characters in this book are GREAT.
