This is a book about surfing culture. Surfing is one of the oldest sports in the world with a lot of history. Nobody knows exactly when surfing began. Sure is, the first surfers were from Polynesia. First they were fishermen who surfed the waves with their boats. Later there were surfers who surfed waves with big Alaia Surfboards. These boards had a weight of around 50 kilos. It was a really long way from the early surfing to the surfing of today. Today there is so much different surf stuff on the market as sand in the sea. The surfboards from today are really light and for every kind of wave there are special boards with a special shape. Also the surf equipment from today makes surfing so much easier than before. In the 1950s the Surf Boom took place in California. This was the time were the surf sport grew. Many people tried in this time to create new surf products. A lot of shapers experimented with new shapes and new materials to make the surfboards lighter, shorter and to give them more flexibility. Few shapers worked on new big wave guns and made it possible to surf bigger waves with them. Also the surf medias grew in this time. The first big international surf magazines come out and the first surf movies were made. Today surfing is still up to date. There are very big surf companies that create and sell surf products all over the world. At all coasts on our planet with surfable waves you can find surf shops, surf schools etc. Now it's also possible to surf in the inland on rivers, wave pools and on lakes. A lot of creative surfers work permanently on new surf methods to surf waves were there normally are no waves. In the meantime there are so many things in the surf scene, that it's possible to write a book about this. This book is a surf lexicon about the surf products, the different waves, the surfers langue and where you are able to surf. Not only beginners will learn a lot about surfing with this book. I'm sure that many expert surfers read things in this book that they have never heard before.
