Despite ongoing debates regarding its authenticity, the sūtra is remarkably comprehensive in content and rigorous in its intellectual framework, encompassing virtually all the essential doctrines of Mahayana Buddhism - which explains its widespread popularity since its appearance. Organized around the threefold structure of Principle, Practice, and Fruition, the sūtra teaches that while all sentient beings possess the ""enlightened, wondrous, bright mind of bodhi,"" their failure to recognize the original purity of their own minds causes them to wander endlessly through samsara. However, by cultivating meditation and realizing the Way, one can attain supreme perfect enlightenment (anuttara-samyak-sambodhi). This teaching has had an extraordinarily profound influence on every school and sect of Chinese Buddhism.
