The essence of Stan Lee

I don't mean this review to be entirely complimentary. I have to say, that even for a little kid, this reads like a fever dream in typeset. I know this to be so because my very discerning 4 year old grandson Matthew, after a few readings, started to find plot holes that you could fly Santa's sleigh through. "Those kids knew that their Daddy was a superhero but not their Mommy?" "Why weren't those kids in bed? Santa won't come if they're awake." "Why would Santa get a speeding ticket?" Really, this story is very similar to Stan's mainstream superhero stories. Incredible leaps over logic, one dimensional characters in a two dimensional world, unfunny witticisms... And yet, SUPERHERO CHRISTMAS sticks with you, thanks in great part to the wonderful art of Tim Jessel. He brings believability to the preposterous story, just as Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and others did back in the days of the Merry Marvel Marching Society. Then too, consider this. Wouldn't someone who is superstrong (lifts a infinitely heavy bag full of toys), superfast (around the world in 24 hours), has small-sized sidekicks, and who believes in the goodness of man be a superhero? Why wouldn't fellow superheroes come to his rescue? And why wouldn't the heroes of last resort be the smallest and most powerless of all? It all fits together, in some warm, wacky way. Matthew agrees with that opinion. He wants me to read it again to him next Christmastime. Thanks, Stan.

A must for any superhero fan

I have some HUGE superhero fans in this house and they really love this book. I think it's especially appealing to them since the kids get to be heroes, too. They are also captivated by the amazing illustrations and the exciting storyline. I appreciated the subtle humor. It's nice to see a book with both parents and kids who have a good relationship with those parents. Overall, a fun book sure to please anyone who likes caped crusaders!

amazing illustrations!

tim jessell has outdone himself in the artwork--think frazetta crossed with buscema
