Super Summit Stories returns with its fourth volume of original tales written by third graders at Summit School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Over six weeks, these young authors worked with Adam Rubin, BookBreak's Author-in-Residence, developing their storytelling instincts through lessons on character, setting, and conflict. The result is exactly what you'd hope for: stories that capture the sometimes hesitant, often quirky, and always beautiful inner workings of an eight-year-old mind.
Each story comes paired with a relief print illustration made by its author in art class. Students created layered prints on foam, first building a patterned "wallpaper" background drawn from their story's world, then adding a bold portrait of their protagonist in contrasting ink. The technique gives every page a handmade warmth that no digital illustration could replicate.
Part of the proceeds from this volume go to a local charity. Pick up a copy and you'll be supporting young writers and artists while getting one of the most genuinely entertaining reads around.
