Noam Chomsky once asserted that if American style libertarianism were taken to its natural extremes, it would lead to the greatest tyranny humanity had yet known, the tyranny of private capital. This is the world into which the skeptical British journalist John Charles Prendergast finds himself after getting into the very insular United States in an alternate reality some fifty years from now (after a disastrous presidential victory). In a highly Christianized culture one monolithic corporation rules the country and the word profit has become synonymous with good. Skepticism endangers the state, and thus John, sympathetic to Labor, finds himself in a spot of trouble after promoting some dangerous ideas while visiting a party spokesman, the country's most well known philosopher, and a corporate run school, among other minor adventures. Behind the scenes lurks resistance, a resistance for whom John feels immediate solidarity.
