Her divorced mother lives in an attached renovated sleeper car. At school, Lumie is an ignored outcast, but her imagination gives her a rich inner life.

She watches the city around her from the caboose's cupola, an observation loft that allows her to see everywhere, which inspires her imagination. But the real magic comes from her connection to her namesake, light. She never tires of watching sunsets, the stars, and the city's sparkle, finding beauty in all of it.
