Dr. Van Bergh is an elderly college professor who was let go from his job. Since that was the only means of living he knew, he fell into depression. He does not know how to go on living life without his students. Until one day, six-year-old Max Smith moves in next door.

Max encourages Dr. Van Bergh to get out into the world again, even if it is only for small walks around the neighborhood. He finds the boy extremely annoying at first, with his many questions about the world around him, but the unexpected happens. Dr. Van Bergh learns something new about Max, and it changes how the old man himself looks at life. From then on, the professor spends his days trying to find ways to help the boy.
