Issued by the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation. Illustrations by Rod Reeves. Narrative by Kay Cappleman. --- "The communities of Winter Garden, Tildenville and Oakland are exceptions to many of the rules in the Sunshine State. Our communities were never really posh retreats for the wealthy. Our landmarks are not ivory towers or playgrounds for the rich and famous. Our buildings are mostly sturdy brick or wooden structures, commonplace bungalows built to service a hard-working, middle-class community. Even our "elegant" hotel was built to lure fishermen and offered a sink in the second-floor lobby to clean the day's catch. While much of early Florida was fashioned by promoters and developers, in our area, the pace was steady and slow. We are part of the uncelebrated Florida. Ours is a community built on fishermen, farmers, small businesses and orange groves."
