SunRays at Midnight

This is a very inspirational journey by a very brave, intelligent and loving man. His survival of the Nazi Holacaust and subsequent life in America following his liberation from eleven concentration camps is amazing and inspiring. His acknowledgement, In regards to how he was able to survive; "It was in part due to him meeting with some great human beings with nobility of spirit." Even in his darkest days and lowest of morale, he was able to see the good in people and utilize their help to keep on going. Norbert Friedman is a very strong and caring man, his story will motivate you to be a better, more tolerant person. A better person.

Norbert Friedman Shows Us The Light

The title of the book, "Sun Rays at Midnight" is a reference to hope shining through the darkness of evil. This book is a series of reflections by a Holocaust survivor, Norbert Friedman, who with his father survived 11 concentration camps, and who provides us with an important work that supports the belief that the human soul can be capable of tremendous good even when long immersed in a sea of horror. The book is well organized presentation of the author's life, from childhood, to a section entitled "Twilight" that focuses on the events of his life at the beginning of World War II, and finally to a section in which Mr. Friedman recounts his experiences with his father as prisoners in a series of concentration camps, each with it's own set of terrors. It is humbly written in a comfortable style that gives you the feeling that you are sitting with the author and hearing his reflections over the kitchen table. The most important section of the book is the "Epilogue," for when you reach this part of the book your mind is filled with thoughts and emotions but hungry for more wisdom. This section is like the movement of a symphony when all the themes come together: in the setting of preparing for a class of students and reviewing in advance their questions about the Holocaust, Mr. Friedman reflects and shares his wisdom about good, evil, faith, hope, and love. He references an earlier story of Reb Mayer Katz, whose unselfish act of sharing a bottle of precious water after many days of little or no water or food to be had without taking any for himself, as an example of a "light" in the "darkness." There is so much to be learned from his perspectives. I highly recommend this book for those who are interested in a different perspective on Holocaust survival, as well as anyone who may benefit from seeking deeper understanding of the power of hope during times of darkness and despair.
