Sun & Shadow: A Beginner's Guide to Cyanotype Printing on Paper and Fabric
Turn sunlight, simple objects, paper, and fabric into striking blue-and-white works of art.
SUN & SHADOW is an approachable introduction to cyanotype printing for anyone fascinated by botanical prints, sun printing, alternative photography, textile art, or hands-on creative processes.
Cyanotype can look almost magical: arrange leaves, flowers, found objects, or other materials on a prepared surface, expose the composition to light, and watch rich Prussian-blue imagery emerge. But successful prints depend on more than placing an object in the sun. Understanding materials, exposure, composition, washing, and the differences between printing surfaces can make the learning process far more rewarding.
A Beginner's Guide to Cyanotype Printing on Paper and Fabric introduces the process in a clear, practical way so you can understand what you are doing-and why.
Inside, you'll explore how to:
- Understand the basic cyanotype process from preparation to finished print
- Work with paper and fabric as creative printing surfaces
- Prepare for exposure and develop stronger compositions
- Experiment with leaves, flowers, objects, shapes, and other imagery
- Build confidence with exposure, washing, drying, and finishing
- Recognize common problems and improve your results through practice
- Explore cyanotype as both an artistic technique and a versatile craft
Rather than treating every print as something that must be perfectly controlled, SUN & SHADOW encourages you to understand the variables, experiment thoughtfully, and discover the distinctive character that makes cyanotype so appealing.
Start with the fundamentals, develop your technique one print at a time, and discover what can happen when sunlight and shadow become part of your creative toolkit.
