In 1905, thirteen-year-old Elsie Shaw and her mother flee the girl's alcoholic father for the safety of Ocean Grove, a seaside Methodist campground in N.J. Two state conventions were held in O.G. that summer--one for woman's suffrage (the right to vote) and one for temperance (the abolishment of alcohol). Elsie is drawn to these strong, progressive women and reaches out to them when disaster strikes her life.
