I read this work in Hebrew, and found it complex, difficult, poetic and moving. And this when I did not fully grasp the course of the action , if there was any, though I did sense two strong elements in the work, memorable characters and an evocation of a time and place , of Jerusalem in the Mandatory twenties and thirties. The work's beauty is in these two things taken together, the very distinct characters and the special atmosphere of the holy city in those days.
