Simply wonderful!

Author and book are largely unknown, but they shouldn't be! Tesich's story of 3 boys in the summer of '61 when they graduate has everything that a good novel needs: sympathetic characters, thrill, suspense, the human touch. Protagonist David Price not only has to stand the hardships of a dying father whom he loves, yet cannot communicate with but also the mysterious thrill of his first love affair with Rachel who seems to be surrounded by a mystery that he cannot grasp. Tesich's style is elaborate and grips the reader. He achieves some remarkable passages that rank among the finest in this genre of literature. Largely forgotten today, this author deserves to be rediscovered.

A valuable lesson

If I ever read a moving book, this was it. Putting the past behind you is so difficult for some of us, whether it is good or bad, and you can feel the narrator's struggle as he is forced to put things behind him that are similar to those that we all experience.
