Sufficient Unto the Day, is the eighth mystery novel in the series The ABC Files, which is set in the fictitious Nova Scotia town of Ashcroft-by-the-Sea. It features three intertwined narratives involving present or former members of Cameron and Carroll, Investigators. In this book, the protagonists are located in different places. In Ashcroft-by-the Sea, Hamish Cameron grows increasingly uneasy about a volatile man with a fake RCMP cruiser, though the local RCMP detachment seems unconcerned. His partner in the detective agency, Sean Carroll, has taken a sabbatical and is navigating his sailboat down the US East Coast with the help of Marjoree Price, who was the firm's office manager They cross paths with a fellow Nova Scotia sailor aboard Sea Witch, with distressing consequences for all of them. Meanwhile, in the Alberta oil sands, a former collaborator, Beth Phillips, is attempting to create a new detective agency, the Tres Amigas, with two other women. One of them, Flora, who is investigating the payments to a company run by the Fort McKay First Nation, gets accused of murder. The three dramas converge on one surprising conclusion, as Sean, Marjoree, and Beth return to Ashcroft to help Hamish.
