THE STORY: A romantic tale of three ladies who, though penniless, extract from life more fun than most people ever enjoy. In Mrs. Feeley's junk yard are gathered a rich assortment of young and old,... This description may be from another edition of this product.
My mother introduced me to Mary Laswell's hilarious stories 20 years ago, when I was in my 20's. I can never forget them. "Suds In Your Eye" was the first I read and I had a ball with it. I, also, enjoy the vernacular of the WWII style that my mother initially had to help me with. Mrs Feeney and Old Timer who live at the junk yard, behind a wall made up entirely of beer cans, are characters you will love. Mrs. Rasmussen is a gem for feeding the crew and various visitors (usually service-men) on a nearly non-existant budget. And what meals! Mrs. Laswell's stories are strong in characters that are not afraid of poverty and hard work. They can get what they need in the most ingenious ways, will never hesitate to expect the best from everyone that they meet, and will give their last '2 bits'($.25) to anyone they find who needs it.
I love this book.

I read this book many years ago at a tender age and it has always stayed with me.It's like the Secret Garden, if the secret garden had been a junk yard surrounded by a wall made from beer cans. The story is sentimental and dated but too charming to keep out of your heart. Being that the setting is a junk yard and it's about a couple of women who drink a lot of beer, it's not your typical children's book. But as a child, I loved it. And as an adult, it transports me back to a place and time that few books can.
