A Case of "Aggressive Abandonment"

Bennett finds that a pattern exists among spouses who suddenly leave long-standing comfortable, happy marriages in a particularly cruel and seemingly irrational manner. She postulates that a group of such people (often men), in the grip of a narcissistic rage, feel no conflict or guilt about their choice. Bennett suggests that many or most of these ecstatic escapees then proceed upon a campaign to wreck emotional and financial havoc upon their forcibly estranged spouses. Bennett's book contains an account of her own such experience and relays those of women in similar circumstances. The information is anecdotal, but readers who have felt such fury from a partner first hand will feel immense relief and vindication. The author defines a very real phenomenon and provides a valuable list of warning signs that may precipitate catastrophy in a good relationship. For any woman who could not imagine the husband she loved and trusted walking out on her after many years together - and who then finds herself in exactly this situation - this book is a Godsend.
