Urban squirrels fall somewhere on the spectrum between pets and wild animals. They have unique appearances, particular behaviors, food preferences, and temperaments--personalities, if you will. Such Agreeable Friends is condensed from a physicist's diary about the squirrels that she and her husband not only fed on the windowsill but also invited into their apartment near Washington Square in New York City. Some of their favorite squirrels were also invited into their hearts and serve as the focus of the book; the humans are definitely secondary characters. The writing strikes an excellent balance between the amusing stories and scientific observation. It is never silly or dry and is interesting from beginning to end. The little line drawings at the head of each chapter are very clever and are worth flipping through the book to enjoy on their own. Most anyone will enjoy reading this book but it really is a must for anyone who enjoys watching and feeding squirrels. Very highly recommended. Note: This book was reprinted as a paperback in 2000 under a new title: Squirrels at My Window: Life With a Remarkable Gang of Urban Squirrels and is also available on Kindle: Squirrels at My Window: Life With a Remarkable Gang of Urban Squirrels.
