Faith in action: the example of Nehemiah
Let us consider for a moment the story of Nehemiah. He was cupbearer to King Artaxerxes, a position of great trust in the palace at Susa. When he learned that the walls of Jerusalem were in ruins and that the people were in great distress, what did he do? He did not simply offer pious prayers. He wept, he fasted, he prayed- then he rose up and acted.
In Nehemiah 1, he spends days praying and confessing the sins of his people. But in chapter 2, when the king asks him, "What do you desire?", Nehemiah does not respond with a pious formula.
