Several friends come together in Denver, building a tight-knit chosen family. They each support one-another's internal struggles as any family member would. Those conflicts are dwarfed by the issues facing the nation around them, however. As the world around them seems to regress, this family chooses to take a stand against the right-wing policies that threaten their livelihood by engaging in civic activism and volunteering on a local mayoral campaign.
