482 letters, twenty years in the life of one woman. 482封信，一个女人20年的光阴 The book The Hong Kong Years of Su Jin is based on the real correspondence between Su Jin and her younger sister Su Mei (the names of the main figures mentioned in the letters have been altered to protect the letter writers and their families). It recounts Su Jin's twenty years of daily life in Hong Kong and the joys and sorrows she experienced during that time. Su Jin was a Shanghai native. In her youth, due to her family's poverty, she became a dance hostess. After meeting Mr. Zhang, she gave birth to three children without any formal status. But Zhang later took his first wife and children to Hong Kong, and Su Jin lost her source of livelihood. In utter desperation, she went to Hong Kong alone in 1956. Her three children remained in Shanghai, cared for by Su Jin's younger sister and brother-in-law. Su Jin lived frugally in Hong Kong, sending money continuously back to Shanghai. Through this book, we can feel Su Jin's endurance and torment as a woman and a mother during her twenty years in Hong Kong; we can also see the attitudes of an ordinary Hong Kong citizen toward life and worldly affairs, especially her unique experience of Hong Kong's changes and development during the twenty years from 1956 to 1976. Although these letters are Su Jin's personal joys and sorrows, they also reflect the lives of ordinary people at the bottom of Hong Kong society from the 1950s to the 1970s; they are both fragments of Su Jin's personal life history and documentary historical materials for the study of Hong Kong's urban history.
