Walking Through Snow

From the moment I viewed the beautiful cover of Stuggles and Triumphs, I was captivated and made eager to discover the writer's message. And who doesn't want to know about real women of a different time and place? The pages inside are even more intriguing than the cover--Cynthia L. Simmons knows her history! Fascinating stories unfold as you read. Details of dress, speech and furnishings will plant you there, a silent observer of each scene. Simmons evokes the mindset and the tenor of time periods past. When Katie, wife of Martin Luther, pauses in her work and rises to stand among the cabbages, the author's skill causes you to smell the dirt and feel the warmth of the sun shining in Katie's auburn hair. The drama in each story is heightened by nuances of emotion reavealed in dialogue, gesture and facial expression. What an illumination it is to see portrayals of women who struggled under the weight of former cultures that appear religious but, in which, true Christianity had not yet fully permeated those societies, societies that at times stole the dignity of the female sex, in general failed to lift women to full protection under the law and often ignored the worth and capability of their minds. Reading this book, you will see how women of faith prevailed despite hampered lives and rough circumstances. You will appreciate more deeply the respect, preservation and opportunity Christ set in motion at the Cross for us who enjoy these enormous blessings during an era when the Christian principles of our nation have come to fruition within a sin-filled world.
