The 1974 first edition of Peterson's "Stress Concentration Factors" is the standard referred to across all industries, from nuclear power to pulp and paper. His work is so pervasive that engineers cite Peterson without even knowing it. The 1997 second edition is also useful for its slick graphics and polynomial curve fits, but the first edition is somehow more accessible. I usually wind up referring to both. It is a tribute to R.E. Peterson's life work that a quarter century after his passing, "Stress Concentration Factors" still influences designs, from bolts and shafts to spacecraft and pressure vessels.
