Street Gang Awareness demystifies gang behaviour by exposing its secret systems of signs and symbols: clothing and hair styles, body ornaments and tattoos, graffiti and hand signals. This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book is excellent for any parent, teacher, counselor, law enforcement officer, attorney or corrections officer. I recommend it highly. If you are located in the mid-west this book will be of particular significance. Not only does this book adress the gang problem, it shows drawings and photos of gang symbols, jewelry, attire and the like. Wondering if your kid is a gang member? Read this book! Bravo to my colleague Steve Sachs.
Excellent Resource

I found this book to be an excellent resource about gang identification and what society and individuals can do to address the gang problem. Friendly, easy to read format and lots of useful illustrations. Most gang books I've found in libraries are theory, this is a "hands on" publication which reads easily. Books like 8 Ball Chick is good reading to find out WHAT gang members do and how they think. This book is useful to IDENTIFY gang members in the schools and neighborhoods. Also had an interesting section of how to decipher graffiti.

A realistic approach to teaching parents and schools, particularly in the suburbs, the dangers of gangs. Parents who are in "denial" about gangs in the burbs should look at the pictures---then look around in their neighborhoods. Author Sachs gives you the facts in an easy to read format. Highly Recommended!
A book for all parents.

As a single mother of 2 teenage sons, this book has been very useful to me. The author uses a lot of photographs and drawings which show gang jewelry, clothing, hats, grafitti, etc., to show parents, teachers and others what to look for to determine if a young person is involved with gangs, or has more than just a passing interest. Not only did I determine that my sons were not involved with gangs (thank goodness!) I used the information to be aware about the dangers of my sons going to other schools for different events wearing the wrong logo and sport teams clothing that gangs have adopted. The author suggests to parents that their children wear nuetral clothing, which makes good sense. The whole book seems to be filled with good sense. When the author discusses and rationalizes the banning your children's use of pagers, searching your child's bedroom, (it's your house! you pay the rent!) he adds a personal story that's a real eye opener. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has children. Schools, and police departments will benefit from this book also. The author gives practical solutions and ideas to help combat the gang problem. I also found the gang / slang glossary very interesting.
