The importance of tourism as a driver of economic and social development should not be underestimated. For more than 40 years, Senegal has relied on tourism to develop its exports and improve the living conditions of its people. However, the constraints of the structural adjustment plan had relegated this sector to the background in terms of supporting its development. Poverty reduction is one of the major concerns of policies initiated in developing countries. Thus, in countries with high tourism potential, the fight against poverty through this economic activity is both a challenge and an opportunity for an emerging economy. Senegal as a destination has significant geo-cultural potential conducive to the development of tourism, which gives pause for thought on strategies likely to revive the sector and place Senegal among the most popular tourist destinations, in order to generate overall growth momentum thanks to the knock-on effects of tourism on other sectors of the national economy.
