Strategic Plan to Support Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture

The promotion of urban and peri-urban agriculture is included in the Kigali City Master Plan. This demonstrates the city council's commitment to facilitating a new economic transition policy in line with the objectives of the city's Vision 2020, which aims to support food security for urban residents through a food production strategy. Urban and peri-urban agriculture is seen as an integral part of the urban environment, providing food, employment and income. It must be managed in such a way as to protect the urban environment and steer its development in harmony with other urban functions and the City of Kigali's Master Plan. The UFA strategy aims to promote the harmonious and effective development of the UFA by removing the identified constraints. It provides an opportunity to help combat pollution and improve living conditions for the entire population by maintaining green spaces that are productive, recreational or serve to enhance the city's appearance.
