Stratas: An Affectionate Tribute

In "StrataSphere," the award-winning film-maker Harry Rasky created a stunning and revealing portrait of Teresa Stratas. In Stratas, he records the extraordinary interview that is the center of that film and relates the story behind its making. At the same time, he enriches the portrait by bringing together excerpts from other interviews that Stratas has given over the years, and critical commentary on some of the highlights of her exceptional career in both opera and film.

A Fascinating Diva Explained

Stratas, a tiny soprano with a huge voice, was one of the most important figures at the Met in the 60's and 70's. That she succeded in overcoming a childhood of poverty in Toronto to become the best singing actress after Callas is remarkable. She is always her own woman and far from being a typical diva. Rasky's book, partially based on his documentary film on Stratas, is beautifully designed and is full of wonderful photos. There is a complete discography. The only thing one misses is a complete list of operatic roles and concert repertoire.
