Manchester, as other cities in the UK was targeted by the Luftwaffe during World WarII. Children growing up in these austere circumstances considered it the normal pattern of life. Though restricted in certain ways, it nevertheless gave freedoms and excitements not normally available to city children. Rival groups encountered their own fears and joys, unlikely friendships made, and broken. The narrator, some four years after the war, is on the cusp of adulthood. The excitement of that first job, and the hopes of renewing a relationship with a childhood sweetheart lure him on.
