'Straight from the Heart' is poetry, drama, reflection, connections and introspection that inspire pride and urges respect and appreciation for American Freedmen urban city stories. The poetry was written in the 1980's and 1990's amid community challenges that created a crisis. The result was the infamous crack epidemic, mass incarceration and record numbers of homicides. Entire families were incarcerated. Prison profits boomed and the Black community struggled.
Buildings closed on historic streets like Ridge Avenue. Many properties were vacant; people lost their homes due to drug addiction, drug sales and the impact of neglecting property taxes, utility bills, family quarrels and dilapidation. This book helps establish opportunities for discussion, teaching, learning and reading aloud, as it also developing positive qualities, portraying pride, respect, dignity and integrity.
