Wardella Wolford Doschek, an American woman of Germanic heritage, embraced Islam in 2003. Straight and Sensible chronicles her family's Christian religious heritage. It tells of her life from young girlhood through her adult years with an emphasis on the evolution of her faith. As a college student she realized that she could no longer call herself a Christian because it no longer made sense to her that Jesus was divine. After three days as an atheist, thoughts of suicide led her to realize that she needed to keep God in her life. Thus began a journey that would lead her to develop her "own religion" based on ideas that made sense to her. Wardella tells about the events leading her to begin studying Islam in the spring of 2003. Much to her amazement she found that the private belief system that she had developed was remarkably coincident with the tenets of Islam.After deciding that it would be hypocritical not to revert (convert) to Islam, Wardella said the Shahada (Confession of Faith) sitting in front of her computer on August 8, 2003. Thus began an entirely new chapter in her life of faith. In the latter portion of the book she tells the reader about the manner in which her life has been changed by this magnificent Faith, from the way she dresses to the way she looks at world events. This book makes emphatically clear how much of an impact faith can have on one's life.
