Outstanding collection of folklore stories from Tory Island
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 27 years ago
This book is a collection of stories as told to Dorothy Therman by five elderly Tory islanders .It tells of life on Tory in the days of their parents and grandparents. There are stories of fishing, great storms at sea, cures and remedies, fairy stories and superstitions. The stories are accompanied by Therman's own photographs of the island, islanders, and several Primitive Paintings by Tory artists. There is a foreword by Derek Hill, the internationally known landscape and portrait painter. This book was clearly a work of love. Dorothy Therman made many trips to Tory Island which is nine miles off the coast of County Donegal. At the time of her first visit in 1980, this Irish-speaking island was still very isolated; 24- hour electricity had been available for only two years. Mrs. Therman made many friends and from these relationships she developed her desire to record their traditional stories. Mrs. Therman was 71 when this, her first book, was published. I hope that she falls in love with another island soon.
