This research is a historical account of the cognitive sciences, such as Artificial Intelligence; behaviourist psychology; neuropsychology and areas of neuroscience, such as neuroanatomy and neurophysiology; and the philosophy of mind. It also seeks to emphasise the relationship between physical processes and cognitive processes. Based on a historical narrative of the cognitive sciences, it discusses materialist perspectives that aim to emphasise: the relationship between neural and cognitive systems; the evolutionary traits that have been significantly important for neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, and for the whole process of consciousness formation. In this way, I rely on the theoretical contribution, above all, of Alexander Luria; Antonio Dam sio; Bears, Connors & Paradiso; Howard Gardner; Paul M. Churchland; Roberto Lent; Steven Pinker, among others.
