As Stone Tablets opens, Istvan Terey, a poet and World War II veteran, is serving as cultural attach with the Hungarian embassy in Delhi just a few months before his country is torn apart by the Hungarian Uprising of 1956. Wojciech Zukrowski (1916-2000) was one of Poland's best-known twentieth-century authors. A prolific novelist, screenwriter, and essayist, he was a war correspondent in Vietnam in the early 1950s, and worked at the embassy in New Delhi from 1956 to 1959. In 1996 Zukrowski won the Reymont Prize for lifetime literary achievement.
