This book was quite enjoyable to read, and I also learned about some real events in Canada's history while reading it. I recommend it to kids aged 10-13 or even older for an fun but pretty easy read. In some places the book is a bit lacking in suspense, but usually the need to keep reading is there. The book's focus is a teen named Maud, who lives in the year 1866 in Ontario, Canada. Her family has been falling apart over the past year, because of the un-expected death of her young brother. Then, to make matters worse, the fenians (irish americans) invade her small town, and fight a hard battle right down the road! Life looks pretty bad for Maud, but trust me, it does pick up. The end is very satisfying, (and somewhat 'perfect') but concludes a worthwhile novel.
