Book Overview

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - The first in a new magical young adult romantasy duology from the bestselling author of To Kill a Shadow. A palace darling and a thief join forces after he unwittingly steals a necklace with the power to change their world forever.

This stunning hardcover edition features gorgeous, flower-patterned sprayed edges, silver foil, and embossing

In the city of Andalay, the ruling Fates bestow gifts among society's most favored. When Damien, a cold and hardened thief, is hired to steal one of those gifts--meant for the "princess" of Ward One, Wren Hayes--he finds himself entangled in a web of secrets.

The gift? A locket containing his own photograph.

Once the locket is opened, hidden truths unravel, shedding light on the ruthless ways of the upper class. Yearning for the three Fates and the magical gifts they bestow, the lords of Andalay will go to any length to keep their power--including murder.

Brought together by destiny, and fighting a dangerous temptation that's becoming harder to resist, Wren and Damien navigate a seedy world where the truth can destroy not only their lives, but the city itself.

City ruled by Fates!

Well, it starts pretty typically with rich girl not getting her magical gift because it has been stolen by tall dark handsome thief and them meeting up to dig into the mystery of stolen gifts and what is going on in the city for dark deeds are occurring. I will say it did hook my interest though, mostly not because of the romance, which kinda was a love triangle, but because of the mystery of the Fates and how it relates to the missing gifts and also the missing people. That bit was delightfully dark and I would definitely not want to live in that city! Not worth it for the magic trinkets that could be powerful but also seem a bit trivial, though the bit at the end is diabolical and while I hate that it was a cliff hanger, it did send chills up my back for Wren and the fate of the city! Did I really connect with the characters? No, but it was a fast read and I do hope that Wren and Damien can save both themselves and the city from a dark fate that relates to the Fates. Their history was fascinating and I hope we can learn more about them in the next book. I am glad I got the chance to read this, even with the cliff hanger. Hope the next book comes out soon!
