Stinky Feet: And Other Memories

For the most part, Stinky Feet is a set of family stories I wrote for my daughter. These stories, written rhymes, are my own childhood experiences. An overactive imagination is a gift that allows you to notice wonderful shapes in the most common of things: clouds, shadows, cracks ... these observations instantly translate into stories and poems. The flip side of this equation is that your mind can over-experience common things. Lizards become real dragons. Pillows become avenging ghosts. I wish I could say this was a childhood phenomenon, but in my 30s I found myself out in the countryside just at the break of dawn. I could hear the whinnying of horses in the background as a dense low, laying fog settled on the high grass. Suddenly, what looked like heads began popping up out of the grass. Any reasonable adult would have thought these shambling figures were laborers. I quickly went through MY list of reasonable possibilities: Escaped Felons, Highwaymen, and zeroed on the obvious-- ZOMBIES and took a step back. The kid me would have high-tailed it, and I would still be running, warning everyone of the danger as I sprinted past. I hope you enjoy these stories, and I hope for a moment or two you also see the common become the impossible.
