Young Titus Fufius has made a complete mess of his life. In a bid to escape, he lies about his age and joins the 47th Legion as a Libritor- an artilleryman working a scorpion, a type of small portable ballista. Tribal unrest draws the 47th out onto the grassy plains of Yallick where they face the mounted archers of the Ozani tribe.
