Stewart County, Tennessee County Court Minutes, 1819 - 1828

This 440-page publication is a word-for-word transcription of the fifth, sixth and seventh Minute Books of the Stewart County, Tennessee County Court (Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions), covering the court terms from November 1819 through August 1828. There is a records loss during this period, from February 1825 through August 1828. The missing minutes have been reconstructed by painstaking research at the Stewart County Archives, using Loose Records and Docket Books to reconstruct the activity of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions during the period of record loss. Special items in the 1819-1828 series of minutes include: - The depositions given at the February 1820 term regarding a land dispute at the mouth of Wolf River, where Memphis now stands. (Until 1818, Stewart County had encompassed all of west Tennessee, and Shelby County, though erected in 1819, didn't hold its first court until May 1820). - Minutes relating to estate settlements, wills and bonds for the 1819-1824 period, due to almost complete record loss in the Settlements and Bonds book for this period, known as Book 3. - Road orders for the early settlements in West Tennessee, which had been legally opened up for settlement by the Jackson Purchase of 1818.
