"Stepping On Water" and its counterpart "Stepping On Water Twice" are about time travel. Charon the Wizard has stated quite emphatically that you can't step on the same piece of water twice. The thought is that time is a fluid like water. Once it is stepped on it can never be rearranged back to its starting point ... except with a magical time machine.

Stepping On Water is the normal time line. Akai is now a Wizard of the Bethos School of Wizardry, and finds out that the world is a much bigger place than just Koali.

The first trip he makes is to Stefos to acquire a rare and powerful element called red phosphorous, that he and Ami must use to defend Koali, from a return of the invaders, who now seek revenge.

Next he goes behind enemy lines, to Vulgaria, where he discovers that Toman Hatres, the evil wizard is still alive after centuries.

Alger the giant red dragon reveals to Akai that Toman Hatres is immortal. Soon Akai and Charon decide that they must kill Toman before he becomes immortal by going back in time. They find a reference in the Bethos Library to an ancient people that discovered time travel. To find the time machine will require the most difficult journey yet for Akai.the Wizard.
