A child stands outside her lamplit home and imagines the lives of many night creatures as they move silently in the unseen, half-sensed world of the darkness. This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is a nice book to read as you're winding down for the day - or really anytime (it's not specifically a bedtime book). My three and five year olds love it, and it also kept the interest of my eight and ten year olds. It's written in a second-person narrative ("you are a shadow against the tall dark tree") and the illustrations show a girl about seven years old. "you" become the various creatures as the author creates them. A month-old mouse, a skunk, etc. However, it is not patronizing or childish. The verses are very descriptive and you really do feel like you know what it's like to become these creatures. One example: "Dark in the darkness, you glide slowly, beating your thin long wings. You dip down over the bushes and rise, and the tip of your long body glows yellow, darkens, then shines again. You are a signal maker; sending messages in the dark to someone like you hiding below. Will she see your tiny light? Will she answer?" It's a nice sensory-rich story to engage your chld's imagination.
