World War II - Steel cents were only produced in 1943. They saved enough copper to build hundreds of B-17s and millions of shell casings. They could not, however, save the lives of two little boys who had stepped onto a stage to receive specially stamped steel pennies as a reward for their efforts collecting scrap metal for the war.
