Stephanie's Book Review.

Lucy and her little brother Josiah walk to school everyday. One day when they were all out side for recess, Simon was standing out in the road watching the children in a very scary way. Everybody in town knows that he is kind of special. He dropped out of school when he was little because everybody picked on him. So he isn't a very smart person. He couldn't even count to ten! All the kids started a snowball fight, so Lucy's friend went to join in, well Simon came up behind Lucy and hit her with a snowball! She kept telling him to stop and leave her alone, but he wouldn't so all the kids went inside. While she was reading she gazed off through the window and Simons face was there. It scared her dearly but, was to scared to tell her teacher. So after school while her and her brother were walking home, they hear stuff behind them and the look back to see what it is and Simon was following them they started to run and the decided to take a short-cut to get home faster but, the snowfall gets so bad the can bearly see and they get lost. Simon is catching up, read this book and see what happens it's a Great Book! I really liked this book because it made me not to want to put it down, I wanted to keep reading and reading to see what happens!

Conquering those Fears

Carol Carrick carefully explores children's fears of other people with mental handicaps. This story, set in the early part of the century, illustrates how a child's fear of the unknown and defeating rumors dissuade us from forming relationships with persons with handicaps. This book could launch an interesting discussion in a classroom about civil rights regarding persons with handicaps or a discussion about facing the unknown. Also, there is an important lesson in safety regarding blizzards. The illustrations also add much personality to the characters, particularly the schoolmaster. I appreciated how the schoolmaster keeps Josiah, the little boy, on task.
