State responsibility for environmental protection

For several years now, governments around the world have been attaching great importance to environmental protection, seeing it as part of the modernization of their states; in particular those of industrialized countries are stepping up their cooperation on environmental protection. As a result, despite consumption of resources and production of pollutants, environmental pollution and ecosystem deterioration tend to slow down the clean-up of certain areas. In terms of environmental policy, the States have also drawn up or amended laws on environmental protection, on the prevention and treatment of water pollution, on the protection of the marine environment, on protection against atmospheric pollution, and on the prevention and treatment of waste.
